אלישבע גרינבאום כ"ה אדר ב', תשכ"ה - י"ט טבת, תשס"ה 29.3.1965 - 31.12.2004 בתנו אלישבע נולדה בבי"ח "הדסה" - עין כרם בירושלים ביום כ"ה אדר ב', תשכ"ה (29.3.1965), חמש דקות לפני אחותה התאומה, ידידה. אלישבע נקראה על שם דודת אביה, אחות אמו, אלישבע (אלזה) פיילכנפלד יעקובוס. השם של ידידה ביטא את תקוותינו שהיא תהיה ידידה לחברים ולחברות, ושהיא ואלישבע תהיינה ידידות לכל החיים. וכך היה. אלישבע וידידה נולדו לאחר האח הגדול יצחק טוביה, שנולד ב-1963 ושהיה מבוגר מהן ב-17 חודש. לימים נולד אח נוסף, ארי, שנולד ב-1969. אלישבע (אלי) גדלה בשכונת בית הכרם בירושלים, ולמדה בבי"ס יסודי בית הכרם ובבה"ס ובתיכון ליד האוניברסיטה העברית. במשך תקופה זו נסענו חמש פעמים בקיץ לארה"ב, שם עבדנו במחנה "רמה" כיועצים לסגל, ובשתי שנים נפרדות היינו במשך שנה בכל פעם בעיר דיורהם, צפון קרוליינה, ארה"ב במסגרת שנות השבתון שלנו. שנים אלו בארצות הברית הרחיבו את אופקיה ופיתחו אצלה סקרנות. אלי הייתה תלמידה חרוצה, ובנוסף לעניין שלה בתיאטרון השתתפה בפעילות פוליטית ופעילות למען החברה. כבר אז היה חשוב לה להשקיע בעבודות "קישוט" בבית הספר, והייתה זאת התחלה של השקעתה עד סוף ימיה בכרטיסי ברכה לחברות ולמשפחה, שהיו מקושטים להפליא בשירים, ציורים, הומור, ותמונות גזורות מן העיתונות. אלי הייתה פעילה בתחומים רבים, ולהתעניינותה בהם היו שורשים בילדותה. כנערה היא הצטרפה לתנועת הנוער "נוער לנוער", שהינה חלק מארגון "בני ברית" העולמי. במסגרת זו חנכה ילדה עם בעיות חברתיות ובעיות במשפחה במשך שנתיים, עבודה אותה בצעה בשקדנות ובנאמנות. היא נפגשה עם הילדה פעם בשבוע, עזרה לה בשעורים וליוותה אותה בטיולים. בקיץ שלאחר סיום כיתה ט' היא נסעה יחד עם משלחת של "נוער לנוער" למחנה קיץ של "בני ברית" במדינת פנסילבניה בארה"ב. במחנה היו בני נוער יהודים מארצות שונות. ההתעניינות של אלי בתיאטרון התגלתה בכיתה ט' כשהצטרפה לחוג לתיאטרון (בהנחיית מוטי לרנר) במסגרת תיאטרון ה"חאן" בירושלים, שם צפתה במחזות ולמדה אותם. אלי שירתה בצה"ל בחיל המודיעין בתל אביב ומצאה את הזמן לצפות מדי פעם במחזות. לאחר שחרורה מצה"ל למדה בחוג לתיאטרון באוניברסיטת תל אביב, ושאיפתה הייתה להיות שחקנית. במסגרת לימודיה היא שחקה בכמה מחזות. ב-1990 אלי קבלה תואר ב.א. בתיאטרון ובמשחק מאוניברסיטת תל אביב. העניין של אלישבע בשירה התחיל גם הוא בילדותה. בשנת 1976 כשהיתה בת 11, היא כתבה את ספר השירה הראשון שלה, שי ליום הנישואין החמישה-עשר שלנו. באוסף שכתבה היו אחד-עשר שירים. כבר אז שיריה בטאו נושאים שהעסיקו אותה כל חייה: דאגה לזולת, בעיות חברתיות, הכמיהה לשלום ורגישות לשימור הסביבה. אלי נישאה לבני שייבה ב-1988, והם היו ביחד כעשר שנים עד שהתגרשו. בחלק מזמנם ביחד בני ואלי שהו בסן-פרנסיסקו, קליפורניה, ארה"ב שם היתה אלי פעילה בתיאטרון אלטרנטיבי. בסן-פרנסיסקו אלי כתבה, ביימה ושחקה במונודרמה שהייתה מבוססת על חייה של דמות דודתי אלישבע (אלזה) שאלישבע נקראה על שמה. אלישבע-אלזה הייתה מורה לעברית ומשוררת, שגרה בברלין כאלמנה בלי ילדים. אלישבע-אלזה הסתתרה באמצעות זהות בדויה במשך מלחמת העולם, וכך שרדה בברלין את המלחמה וניצלה מן השואה. אלישבע-אלזה נפטרה כשנתיים אחרי המלחמה בניו-יורק. אלי מאוד התענינה באשה זו ודמותה העסיקה אותה, היות ואלישבע-אלזה הייתה חייבת להיות "שחקנית" בעולם של המציאות: כדי לשרוד, פשוטו כמשמעו. היחס לאלישבע-אלזה ולשמה, היו משולבים בעניין של אלישבע בזהותה כאישה וכיהודיה. המחזה שכתבה אלי מתאר את חוויותיה של אישה, המסתתרת מן השלטונות בגרמניה הנאצית והיחסים בין אלי לאלישבע-אלזה. היו שלוש גרסאות של המחזה, שתיים מהן באנגלית שעלו על הבמה בסן-פרניסקו בשנת 1992: A Few Days Longer than a Rose ו-The Mustard Seed. המחזה השני הוצג במסגרת פסטיבל "סולו-מיו" בסן-פרנסיסקו . לאחר שובה ארצה אלי כתבה גרסה עברית של המחזה בשם "אלישבע", שלא בוים. מ-1993, לאחר שובה ארצה אלי עבדה במסגרות מאתגרות שונות. במשך שנים היא הנחתה סדנאות לדרמה בבתי הסוהר איילון, מעשיהו והשרון. אלי שתפה את האסירים בכתיבה, בימוי ומשחק במחזות שהם עצמם יצרו. באחד המחזות, "כיפה אדומה" האסירים בכלא השרון תיארו את ניסיונותיהם בהתמודדות בפשע ובסמים. המחזה היה מרגש מאוד לשחקנים ולצופים כאחד. כמה מן האסירים כתבו מכתבים לאלי שהעידו על הערך המרפא הייחודי של ההשתתפות בסדנא לתיאטרון ושל העבודה עם אלי. בתקופה זו אלישבע ובני התגרשו. בין 1993 ל2002 כתבה אלי מספר מחזות, נזכיר כמה מהם פה . (פרטים נוספים על כל המחזות למצוא בדף התיאטרון באתר זה). ב - 1993 אלי כתבה ושיחקה ב"ציפור גן עדן מס. 17" בתיאטרון "הסימטה" ביפו בהדרכת ניקו ניתאי. אלי כתבה את "התינוק של בן-שטרית" (מונודרמה) במסגרת פסטיבל "תיאטרונטו" ב-1995, דורון תבורי ביים ואלון אבוטבול שחק. את המחזה "סולטנה אמורה", שבויים במסגרת פסטיבל עכו לתיאטרון אלטרנטיבי כתבה בשנת 1997. ב-1999 אלישבע כתבה את "תפוזי דם", שבוים במסגרת פסטיבל תיאטרון קצר באולם צוותא בתל אביב ע"י רויטל איתן. ב-2003 אלישבע השתתפה במשלחת של מחזאים ישראלים ופלשתינאים שהתבקשו ע"י תיאטרון "היילברון" לכתוב מחזה במשותף. התוצר המשותף היה אוסף של מחזות קצרים שנקרא "צדדים מנוגדים". אלישבע כתבה שני מחזות במופע (באנגלית): "ההפגנה" ו-"חקירה". המחזה "ההפגנה" הוצג בקריאה בתיאטרונים המוקדשים לנושאים יהודיים בדיורהם, צפון קרוליינה, ובעיר וושינגטון, ארה"ב. בתקופה זו אלישבע כתבה, בהזמנת תיאטרון חיפה, את המחזה "תופרות" שבוים ב-2002 ע"י עודד קוטלר. מ-1995 עד 1998 אלישבע הנחתה חוגים לדרמה יצירתית, בנושאים הקשורים לתנ"ך וחגי ישראל, וגם ביימה מחזות עם ילדים ב"בית טף", פנימייה לילדים ממשפחות מצוקה בפרדס חנה, וגם בבית ספר "ארזים" , בית ספר לילדים עם בעיות התנהגות בראשון לציון. באותה תקופה, במסגרת פרויקט "אמן ביישוב" בחסות "אמנות לעם" היא הנחתה סדנאות למורים, לבני נוער ולילדים בעיר טבריה. סיני פטר יזם והדריך את הפרוייקט. מאז תקופה זו אלישבע הייתה פעילה בכתיבת שירים ומחזות, בהוראה ובהנחיית סדנאות. היא עבדה במסגרת "מתא"ן" (מפעל תרבות ואמנות לנוער) כאחראית על הסדנאות לכתיבה יצירתית. ב-1997 אלי קיבלה מלגה שאפשרה לה להשתתף בסדנה לכותבי שירה במסגרת הליקון, בהדרכת אמיר אור במשכנות שאננים בירושלים. בהמשך, אלישבע הנחתה בסדנאות של הליקון לכותבי שירה ופיתחה והנחתה קורס הדרכה למנחים של סדנאות שירה במסגרת "מתא"ן". היא גם הנחתה את "קברט השירה", מפגש חודשי להקראת שירה מטעם הליקון בתל אביב. אלישבע הייתה קשורה ל"הליקון", "מתא"ן" וסמינר הקיבוצים החל מתקופה זו עד סוף ימיה. במקביל לפעילות זו, אלישבע למדה פסיכו-דרמה במכללת סמינר הקיבוצים בתל אביב והתחילה לימודים לקראת התואר מ.א. במגמה לכתיבה יצירתית באוניברסיטת בן-גוריון שבנגב. מ-2000 אלישבע עבדה בסגל ההוראה של מכללת סמינר הקיבוצים שם לימדה תלמידים להוראה שעורים וסדנאות על דרמה בהוראה, במיוחד בעניין חגי ישראל ונושאים מן התנ"ך. ב-2000 הופיע ספר שיריה הראשון, "עורף האור" בהוצאת "הליקון". גם ב-2003 אלישבע השתתפה בפרויקט "גוונים" ללימוד ודו-שיח בין אנשי רוח ישראלים ויהודים-אמריקאים, בחסות הפדרציות היהודיות בסן פרנסיסקו וניו-יורק. במסגרת זו השתתפה בדיונים ובסדנאות משותפות עם מחנכים ומנהיגים קהילתיים יהודים בארץ ובארה"ב. במסגרת פרויקט זה ייסדו אחדים מחבריה לתכנית את "קהילת בית תפילה ישראלי". זוהי קהילה הנפגשת במכללת "עלמה" בתל אביב והמקיימת מפגשים לשם תפילה, שירה ולימוד בערבי שבת ובחגים. בקהילה זו משתתפים ישראלים חילוניים ברובם, שחלקם לא השתתפו בפעילות כזו קודם להצטרפותם לקהילה. אלישבע היתה פעילה בקהילה זו עד סוף ימיה, ושאבה סיפוק רב מההשתתפות בה. ב-2003 אלישבע זכתה בפרס "טבע", פרס ראש הממשלה למשוררים בתחילת דרכם, בפסטיבל המשוררים במטולה. 2004, השנה האחרונה בחייה, הייתה עמוסת פעילות בכל התחומים. בשנה זו סיימה את לימודיה לתואר השני. בקיץ באותה שנה היא השתתפה יחד עם טל ניצן-קרן בפסטיבל בין-לאומי לדברי (Ledbury) לשירה, באנגליה (ראו שיר של טל ניצן בדף חברים כותבים באתר). כבר באותו קיץ התחילה לסבול מכאבים שאת מקורם לא ידעה. בשובה ארצה היא והחבר שלה, דוד פישלוב, עברו לדירה במטרה לכונן בית ביחד בתל אביב. המעבר והשיפוצים העסיקו מאוד את אלי, והם עברו לדירה בספטמבר, כשלשה שבועות בלבד לפני שאובחנה. בתקופה זו היא גם הייתה עסוקה מאוד בתכנון פעולותיה לקראת השנה היהודית והאקדמית החדשה. בסוף אוקטובר, לאחר סידרת בדיקות קיבלה את האבחנה הסופית: סרטן ריאה שהתפשט לאברים נוספים רבים. אלישבע חלתה למרות שלא עישנה ועשתה הכל כדי לקיים אורח חיים בריא. היא קבלה טיפולי הקרנה וטיפול כימי חדשני דרך תרופה שנטלה בבית. הטפול מנע את הצורך באשפוז. אלישבע הייתה נחושה לנצח את המחלה, ואפילו הנחתה סדנה (בפעם האחרונה) במסגרת כיתת השירה של הליקון בסוף אוקטובר. אלישבע תכננה כמעט עד הסוף לחזור לעבודה, למרות הכאבים והאימה של המחלה, איתה היא ניהלה מאבק מתמיד. אלישבע לא התענינה בהסתברויות של הישרדות, אך רצתה לדעת כל פרט על המחלה כדי לנצח אותה, ועשתה את הכול, נפשית ופיזית, כדי לעשות זאת. אלישבע התרכזה בתקופה זו כל כולה במאבק על חייה, תוך שכוחותיה הולכים ואוזלים, שכן המחלה התפתחה במהלך החודשיים האחרונים לחייה במהירות מסחררת. רבים רצו לעזור ולבקר, אך אלישבע לא יכלה, בפעם הראשונה בחייה, להיות בקשר עם הרבה אנשים ולקבל מבקרים. רבים גם כאבו את העובדה שלא ניתן היה להם להיפרד ממנה. לכן חשוב לדעת שהיא הלכה מהעולם בתחושה שרבים רבים אוהבים אותה ומחבקים אותה גם מרחוק, דרך פרחים, שירים, טלפונים, מכתבים והודעות שנמסרו לה בכל פעם בדייקנות רבה, גם בשלב בו הכרתה הייתה מעורפלת. המסרים הועברו ע"י אחותה ידידה, שהתמסרה לטיפול באלישבע וניהלה את הקשר עם כל הגורמים והאנשים שהיו קשורים אליה. האחים, יצחק -שבא מרחוק לתקופות ממושכות- וארי, עזרו הרבה. שבוע לפני מותה הופיעה מהדורה שנייה של ספרה "עורף האור" (בהוצאת הליקון ותוך התגייסות של אנשי ההוצאה למשימה) הספר, שהוגש לה ע"י המשוררים ליאת קפלן ותמיר להב-רדלמסר, היה הספר האחרון שזכתה להחזיק בידיה. אלישבע זכתה לבלות את כל תקופת מחלתה בבית בתל אביב, ושם גם נפטרה בלילה שבין יום חמישי לשישי באחת אחר חצות, ב- י"ט טבת, תשס"ה (31.12.2004). ההלוויה בהר המנוחות בירושלים התקיימה בצהרי אותו יום שישי. אנו זוכרים בעיקר את אצילות הנפש של אלישבע חרף כל הקשיים והסבל בתקופה זו. במשך ה"שבעה" באו, בין היתר, תלמידים רבים, יהודים וערבים, דתיים ולא-דתיים- שהעידו על השפעתה של אלי עליהם. רבים אמרו שלמרות הבדלים בתרבות או השקפה, הם הרגישו נוח בסדנאות של אלי, שהיו מקור השראה. מאז מותה התקיימו שני אירועים לזכרה: אחד שאורגן על ידי "מתא"ן" ואחד על ידי "הליקון", אירועים ששיקפו את עבודתה, את ההערכה אליה ותרומתה לרבים, כמו גם את המורכבות שבה, הססגוניות והשובבות שבה. באביב תשס"ה (2005) בטקס חלוקת התעודות של אוניברסיטת בן-גוריון קיבלה יהודית, אמה של אלישבע את תעודת ה-מ.א., בהצטיינות, שלה. ראוי לסיים את הביוגרפיה הקצרה בכך שלאחר מותה ייצאו לאור שני ספרים הודות למענק ממפעל הפיס בהוצאת "כרמל", ירושלים. המענק הגיע ביזמת ליאת קפלן. ספר אחד, שכבר הופיע, הוא ספר השירה "לפתע פתאום האדמה", בעריכת ליאת קפלן שכולל שירים ישנים וחדשים. השני, "שלושה מחזות", בעריכת יעל קרמסקי, יופיע בתחילת 2006 וכולל את "תפוזי דם", "התינוק של בן שיטרית", ו"תופרות". יעל וליאת לא חסכו מאמץ כדי להוציא לאור ספרים אלה במהירות המרבית ובאיכות גבוהה. אלישבע נגעה בחייהם של הרבה אנשים שפגשה ,חלקם חברות שהיו לה מגיל הגן, וחלקם אנשים שפגשה בכל תקופה בחייה. היחסים אתם אופיינו ע"י הערכה הדדית, מטרות משותפות, תמיכה נפשית ואהבה. אנו מקווים שמפעל חייה של אלישבע, בשירה, בתיאטרון, בהוראה, ובעיקר- בחיים, ימשיכו להיות מקור להשראה ועידוד. יהודית וזאב (צ'רלס) גרינבאום אמא ואבא של אלישבע ELISHEVA GREENBAUM March 29, 1965 - December 31, 2004 Elisheva was born on March 29, 1965, in Jerusalem ,a younger sister to Yitzhak, at that time 17 months her senior and a twin sister to Yedida, who was 5, minutes her junior. Elli, as she was affectionately known by all, was named after an aunt of her father Charlie. Dida, as she is known, was named Yedida, a friend, in the hope that the girls would be life long friends. And so it has been. Another brother, Ari joined the family in December 1969, and so Elli and her siblings had a baby that they could love and spoil. Elli was always connected to and interested in each and every family member and, at one time or another, she helped each one. Elli grew up in Bet Hakerem, Jerusalem and attended the neighborhood Bet Hakerem Elementary School and L'Yad ha Universita High School. She spent two separate sabbatical years in the U.S, with her family in Durham, NC and 5 summers in Camp Ramah. Elli grew up in an English speaking home (I, her mother, spoke English to all) but outside the home and with her father and siblings, her main language was Hebrew. Despite the refreshers to her English, which she received in the U.S. over the years, and although she was truly bilingual, she felt more comfortable writing in Hebrew, which she considered "her language". Over the years Elli made her mark in several areas, many of which had their roots in childhood and adolescence. As a youngster she joined "Noar l'Noar" (Youth to Youth), a Bnai Brith organization, and was a big sister to a disadvantaged child. Weekly she met this child, helped her with homework and took her on "tiyulim". In the summer after the ninth grade she participated in a "mischlachat" (delegation) and attended a Bnai Brith summer camp in Starlight, Pennsylvania with children from different countries. There she met an English girl who was to become a lifelong, beloved, and devoted friend, Rebecca Wolman. Rebecca and Elli corresponded ever after and managed to meet one another over the years in England or Israel until Rebecca made aliyah. As time went on, they shared a passion for theater and writing. For Elli, this love was already evident in the ninth and tenth grades, when she participated in a theater "chug" (club) at the Khan Theater where she studied, analyzed and viewed plays. During her Army stint in the Intelligence Service, she managed to attend the Theater "chug" at Tel Aviv University and later became a student in their Theater department, majoring in acting. She acted in many plays put on by the Theater department, and her hope at this time was to make it as an actress. She received her B.A. Cum Laude in Acting and Theater from Tel Aviv University in 1990. Elli's interest in poetry also goes back to her childhood. In 1976, when she was 11, she wrote her first book of poetry - a gift to her parents in honor of their 15th wedding anniversary. There were 11 poems in this collection, the themes of which already demonstrated her sensitivity to the environment, social issues and her concern for others. In 1988, Elli married Benny Shaibe. They were together for a ten year period until they divorced. Some of that time was spent in San Francisco, where Elli actively participated in Fringe Theater. She wrote and acted in a play based on the life of her namesake, "Elisheva" who had lived in Berlin during the war and had to act out many parts in order to survive. Elli was always intrigued and troubled by her namesake who was also a teacher and a poet, a woman who married and was widowed young without children, and who herself died young after having survived the hardships of the war. Her relationship to this aunt and her name and her identity as a twin were all issues Elli struggled with. The play, a monodrama, which explored the experiences of a Jewish woman living underground in Nazi Germany, was written in three versions, one in Hebrew with the name, "Elisheva" and two versions in English, "A Few Days Longer than a Rose" and "The Mustard Seed". The latter, "The Mustard Seed", was staged at the Solo-Mio festival in San Francisco in 1992. Back in Israel in 1993, Elli worked in a variety of settings, teaching drama and creative writing in Ayalon, Ma'asiyahu and Hasharon Prisons. Elli worked with the inmates in Hasharon Prison who wrote and performed plays based on their lives. In one play, "Little Red Riding Hood" the inmates described their experiences of being seduced into the world of drugs and crime. The performance was a very moving experience for participants and audience alike. The many letters Elli received from the inmates, attest to their remarkable experience. Also in 1993, Elli wrote and acted in "Edenbird no. 17", a cabaret play for three women performed at Hasimtah Original Theater Festival in Jaffa. The play is composed of a variety of stories in the lives of women from childhood to old age, many of them hilariously funny and insightful, but at the same time, deadly serious. Both in her acting and in her writing, Elli had a very keen sense of observation and herself was a skillful comic. From 1995 -1998, Elli taught drama and co-directed plays with children at "Bet Taf", a children's residential institution in Pardes Chana. She also taught in the Tiberias municipality as a Community Theater Group Leader, working through the "Artist in the Community" Project of Omanut La'am (Art for the Public) under the leadership of theater director Sinai Peter. As part of their activities, she led a drama workshop for women focusing on Jewish themes, and taught creative drama and storytelling. At about the same time, Elli was also working at the Arazim School in Rishon Le'zion, where her work with children and youth with behavioral problems focused on biblical stories and plays for the Jewish holidays. All of these projects provided tough challenges, working with children and adults who had a difficult time in life. Elli devoted a great part of herself to developing strong relations with the children she taught and involving them in drama, she developed many ideas for reaching out and teaching them. At this time, Elli, herself, was continuing her own education and writing plays. In 1995, she wrote "Ben Shitrit's Baby", a surrealistic, realistic monodrama, based on life in prison, written for the Theatroneto Festival, performed by Alon Abutbul and directed by Doron Tavori. From the late nineties, one sees Elli's development simultaneously in the three strands of poetry, playwriting and teaching, although one or the other usually dominated at a given time. She began working for Matan, Arts and Culture Project for Youth (1999-2003) as head of the Creative Writing Department, responsible for developing and administering the creative writing program for youth and adults. Elli also led bibliodrama workshops, which explored biblical themes through dramatic and psychodrama techniques. In 1997, through a special scholarship, Elli participated in the Poets' Workshop sponsored by "Helicon" and "Mishkanot Shaananim", and directed by Amir Or. This gave Elli's career as a poet a significant boost. In the years following, she was a co-editor and producer of Helicon's "Poetry Cabaret", held once a month in Tel Aviv. This was an opportunity for her to present others' poetry as well as her own. She also led workshops for Helicon for both Jewish and Arab adults to mentor others. Some of Elli's poetry was also published in Israel's major literary magazines at this time. In 1997, Elli wrote the play "Sultana Amoreh" which was performed at the Acco Alternative Theater Festival. "Sultana Amoreh" was a political piece about men and women running away from their country on a "love boat", trying to escape civil war that was raging there. In 1999, Elli wrote "Blood Oranges", a play performed at the Tzavta Theater in Tel Aviv. The play deals with the interaction between an older woman and a younger man on the night she hears of the death of her last son. All this creative activity took place while Elisheva was completing a course in psychodrama at the Seminar HaKibbutzim College in Tel Aviv and beginning her studies for the M.A. degree at Ben Gurion University in the Negev. In 2000, Elli's first book of poetry, "The Nape of Light", was published by Helicon. From the late nineties until her untimely death, Elli was also teaching drama in the classroom to students of education in the Pre-School Program at Seminar Hakibbutzim College. At the same time that she was working with Matan and Helicon, and was studying at Ben-Gurion University, she was commissioned by Haifa Theater to write the play "Seamstresses". The play, produced in 2002, directed by Oded Kotler, was performed for several months. It was based on a true story in Israel dealing with women seamstresses who take over a shut-down textile factory. The year 2003 was another very fruitful year for Elli. She was part of a delegation of Israeli and Palestinian playwrights chosen to co-write a play commissioned by The Heilbronn Theater in Germany. Elisheva contributed two plays written in English to the final production which was called "Opposing Sides". The plays were "The Demonstration" and "According to the Rules", and dealt with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a personal perspective. Both of these plays have since been read and performed at Jewish Theaters in the United States. In still another project, in May of 2003, as part of the "Gvanim" program for furthering Jewish Pluralism in Israel sponsored by the Jewish Federations of San Francisco and New York, Elli was one of a delegation of young Israeli artists who traveled to San Francisco and New York in order to exchange ideas with Jewish educators and community leaders. During the year leading up to the trip, the group studied together in Israel and upon their return, the different members initiated projects in the Israeli community. Beit Tefillah, a worship service which attracts non-religious Israelis, is one of the projects that developed as a result of this activity and seed money from the Federations in the U.S. Elli was very active in this community. To the end of her life, she loved to participate in and received great benefit from the Kabbalat Shabbat services of Beit Tefillah, held at Alma College. In June of 2003, at the Metulla Festival of Poetry, Elli was awarded the prestigious "Tevah" prize in poetry. Earlier, in 2002, Elisheva was awarded The Prime Minister's prize for poetry. The year 2004 was to be Elli's last year, and this too she lived to the fullest right to the very end, working for Matan, Helicon, Seminar Ha kibbutzim, while continuing her writing and her studies. She also traveled once a week to Beersheba in order to complete her university studies. As with everything Elli did, she worked assiduously at her studies. She completed her degree for a Master of Arts in the Department of Hebrew Literature at Ben Gurion University in the Negev. I (Judy) received Elisheva's MA degree in Creative Writing (with distinction) posthumously, in June 2005, in a very poignant ceremony at which some of Elli's poetry was read. In the summer of 2004, Elli participated in the prestigious International Poetry Festival at Ledbury in Wales with another Israeli poetess, Tal Nitzan. Despite the already debilitating pain she had begun to suffer; she gave her very best to this project. Upon her return to Israel, she put her waning energies into a lifelong dream of hers, setting up a home with her partner, David Fishelov. Tragically, the dream was cut short. Elli continued working and planning for the academic year, even after she received the brutal diagnosis of a catastrophic illness: lung cancer. Elli suffered this illness even though she was a non-smoker. It was a devastating diagnosis. Elli never wanted to know what her chances were, nor how much time she might have. She was determined to beat the disease and live. She did everything in her power to succeed. Her many beloved and devoted friends and family did their best to help her. Many others contacted her and wanted to visit and help. However, for the first time in her life Elli could no longer keep up her intense relations with many people. She tried to save all of her strength for fight for survival and against pain, and this battle became her life task. During this battle, it was a source of joy to her that just a week prior to her death she was able to see the second edition of her first book of poetry ,"Nape of Light", published, brought to her by poets Liat Kaplan and Tamir Lahav-Redelmesser. It was the last book she held in her hands in her life. Elli received every message and every letter sent to her, through the efforts of her sister Yedida, who managed the care that Elli received. Elli was grateful for every message received. Her care was in the hands of Yedida, Yitzhak, Ari, David, her parents, a few close friends, the medical home care staff of the Maccabi Health Services and nurses who stayed with her in the nights toward the end of her life. We, her parents, are grateful beyond words to all of them. Elli received medication at home and did not have to be hospitalized. Elli died at home in Tel Aviv on December 31, 2004. The funeral was held the same day at the Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem. During the week of the Shiva (mourning period) many of her students visited to tell us of the great influence that Elli had on them, how much they gained from her workshops and from contact with her. Some wrote tributes and poems that can be found on her website. Elisheva would be very pleased to know that at the initiative of Liat Kaplan, two books of hers are being published (thanks to a grant from the Israel National Lottery (Mifal Hapayis) by Carmel Publishing, Jerusalem and will be in the bookstores in early 2006. One of these publications is a second book of her new poems in Hebrew, "All of a Sudden, the Earth" - Hebrew title: "Lefetah Pitom Ha'Adamah" - edited by the poet Liat Kaplan. The second is a book of plays called "Three Plays (Sh'loshah Machazot) by Elisheva Greenbaum", edited by theatre director Yael Cramsky. This book contains three of the plays that were produced in Israel and as well as an article on Elisheva's plays. The article is by playwright Josefa Even-Shoshan (which has also appeared in the Israeli journal "Teatron"). Both Liat and Yael are close colleagues of Elisheva. They have given generously of their time to bring Elisheva's work to publication. We are very grateful to them for their devoted effort that enables others to share in Elisheva's work. This, in brief, is Elisheva's biography. It hardly does justice to Elli, the person, the wonderful daughter, devoted sister, integral family member, loyal friend and companion, creative teacher, talented poet and playwright and lots more.
